John Holleman Claims First-Career Legends Victory during Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (June 11th, 2015) – 18-year-old Winston-Salem, North Carolina, native John Holleman drove the No. 4 Midway Mobile Storage Legends Car with Devo Motorsports to victory lane on Tuesday, June 9th, in the Legends Semi-Pro division feature of the 2015 Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC). The victory marks the first time in his racing career he has won in Legends, and it happened at one of the biggest stages for INEX racing worldwide.

The win was Holleman’s 170th career victory, just one week after he won his first race of 2015 in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman division at Bowman Gray Stadium (NC).

“It was a great race,” said Holleman, who started on the pole and led all the laps. “I finally got a victory in the Legends Car, and it happened at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout. This is amazing.”

Holleman, who started racing Go Karts when he was five years old, has driven in many different types of racing disciplines, including Four Cylinders, Street Stocks, Sportsman cars, Limited Late Models, and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. But, despite his many victories and 19 different championships, Legends Car victory lane had eluded him.

“I was fortunate enough to have picked up a lot of victories in the Bandolero, but when I moved up to Legends a few years ago I just couldn’t quite get to victory lane,” explained Holleman. “I somewhat moved on to the Sportsman, Late Model, and the K&N Pro Series East cars, but every once in a while I got back in that Legends Car to see if I could get a win. It just didn’t seem like it was going to happen.

“A few weeks ago we talked about it and decided to try one more time, and enter the Summer Shootout to do it because it is the most-prestigious series for Legends. We knew we needed someone to work on our car that could get us to where we needed, so we contacted Devo of Devo Motorsports. I think he is one of the only people to be around Legends since they started, so he was the right guy to set up our car.”

On Monday, during the round one event, Holleman started 11th in the feature, finishing third. Tuesday, he qualified sixth, but an invert had him starting on the pole. He was able to hang on up front, despite older tires and the quick turn-around to get the car ready.

“We didn’t give Devo much time to prepare the car from when we made our decision to race,” said Holleman. “We also didn’t get a chance to break in some new tires, so we were using tires from the Winter Heat Series in January. So we weren’t as fast as we wanted to be up front, but I was able to drive the corners in a way that allowed me to get off the turn and power down the straights. It was a close battle as I did get passed and had to pass right back the next corner, but we made it work.”

Holleman will race the entire 10-round series, looking for more victories and contending for the championship. But, for now, Holleman is enjoying his first-career Legends win.

“The Semi-Pro division is stacked with a lot of great drivers and stiff competition. We are going to have to bring our A game every week to try and pick up more victories and contend for the championship, but we are ready. A big thanks to Devo for all his work, and to my sponsors, friends, and family for the support.”

Holleman will head back to Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, June 13th, to race in the NWAAS Sportsman division before heading back to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the third round of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series on Tuesday, June 16th.
