WINSTON SALEM, NC : On Saturday night the most storied of them all, Bowman Gray Stadium opened up the 2016 season.  In a mad dash from Virginia International Raceway, John Holleman IV arrived in time from his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event to start the 40-lap Sportsman race and came home with a solid 3rd place result.

After qualifying in the second spot on Friday night, Holleman would begin the feature on the outside pole and quickly dropped in line in second.  However, as the field headed into turn one on lap two, Holleman was moved out of the racing groove by Michael Adams which shuffled him back to fifth place.

The first caution flag waved early on which allowed Holleman to line up on the outside of row one again after the field chose inside or outside.  Holleman was able to keep the Midway Mobile Storage/Baity’s Tire Dodge Challenger in the front battle and after contact from the third place runner behind him, which sent him into the leader, he moved up to second before the next caution waved.

Some more hard racing action took place over the second half of the race and as Holleman was in second place, the Sportsman champion from last season, Zack Clifton, did the bump and run to take away the runner-up spot.

Holleman dropped back to fourth after the contact, but he was able to rebound to retake third in the final laps and crossed the line with a solid third place result to begin his championship quest for the Sportsman division at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Disappointed with not be able to win on opening night, Holleman was still upbeat with a third place finish.  He had these comments about his performance on Saturday night.

“We have the capabilities of being a threat to win every night that we roll out on to the race track, so we expect to do nothing less than get a win.”

“We had a solid start to the season with a podium finish, which is just what we needed to get this season kick-started.  I think we definitely opened some eyes on Saturday night with our impressive performance.”

The 2016 Sportsman season continues on Saturday night, May 7th at Bowman Gray Stadium with another 40-lap race.
