CONCORD, NC : Last June John Holleman scored his first career U.S. Legend Cars win in the second race of the Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Holleman went on to score his second later in the series and finished with 9 top tens in the 10 race series. However, his championship hopes were dashed on the second to last night after a disappointing result.
Bring on a new year, new summer, new team and the same fiery drive that is there to go capture the championship in 2016. Holleman has joined the AK Performance powerhouse stable which is led by Jeff and Kendall Sellers, along with Riley Halverson’s extensive knowledge of the sport. The team impressed with strong showings last month at the inaugural Trophy Dash on Charlotte’s new 1/5th-mile in their debut together.
Holleman was out in his Midway Mobile Storage/SurplusContainers.net Legends car last night practicing for tonight’s opening round of the series. He was very happy with the car and the excitement and optimism for a good summer is electric in their camp.
“Practice went really good and every time out we picked up a tenth,” said Holleman. “We were running really good times and some of the best times that we have ever run here. AK Performance and Riley [Halverson] have my car hooked up and it shows.”
“We are coming in here with aspirations of a championship. We know what it takes now after being so close last year. Once you get that close you can either let it get you down or learn from it, and we have definitely learned from it.”
“I have a plan as a driver of what I need to do all ten weeks to be there at the end and luckily we have a car that has enough speed to keep us there. You can’t win the championship running tenth and we have a fast race car to be in contention.”
The Semi-Pro class is stacked with tough challengers from all over the country trying to compete for the crown.
“[Nolan] Pope is really good and has been strong lately. Then there is Tyler Truex and Jacob Heafner who have been putting on a show wherever they go, and they are some of the top competitors in the Semi-Pro division. We always race hard and with respect and it will be a good Summer Shootout Series if we can compete with those guys all ten weeks.”
The Bojangles’ Summer Shootout gets underway on Tuesday, June 14th and runs through August 2nd.
