WINSTON-SALEM, NC : The 2016 season at Bowman Gray Stadium was not the overall result John Holleman was looking for back in April when it began. This past Saturday night in the final Sportsman feature of the season, Holleman left his mark on the field as he stood in victory lane for the second time in his Midway Mobile Storage machine.
Holleman began the 40-lap event in the fifth position and moved up to fourth after one lap. A few laps later he moved around long time rival Billy Gregg for the third spot and began to chase the lead duo down.
Holleman renewed his season long battle with Michael Adams for the runner-up spot around the midway point in the event before he eventually made the pass and took second away.
The first caution of the event flew just past halfway which allowed Holleman to restart alongside leader Andrew Durham. Holleman made a run on the outside, but had to drop back in line behind the leader.
A couple of laps later Holleman got a run off turn four and moved to the inside of Durham for the lead, but he was chopped off and saved the car after the contact. A caution waved for debris right after.
The ensuing restart was used by Holleman to get a great jump on the outside as the leader spun his tires. Holleman would take over the lead of the race as they headed into turn one.
Holleman went on to hold off the other challenges after a couple late restarts to score his second win of the 2016 season at The Madhouse. Along with his win, Holleman also finished third in the final point standings, took home the Most Popular Driver award for the Sportman Division and the Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps during the season.
“I say we had that goal in mind [winning tonight], it was definitely our goal coming in. We were the defending race winner from last year, so now we have that two in a row going on by winning the last race of the season. It is a pretty good feeling to go out on top because you have all offseason to brag about it,” said Holleman after the race win.
