CONCORD, NC : On a hot and humid July Tuesday evening in North Carolina, John Holleman was able to finish the Legends Pro feature event in third place, which is his best result in the division so far. Since the move up to the Pro class that began in week three, the AK Performance team has been getting the car faster each week. By the end of the feature this past Tuesday, Holleman’s Midway Mobile Storage Legend car was turning the same lap times as the leaders.
Holleman lined up 9th to begin the 25-lap feature event. The race would go green until five laps to go after the leader broke on the backstretch. This gave Holleman the chance to choose the outside lane for the next restart.
As the field went into the first turn after the green flag waved, contact with the front runners allowed Holleman to get around several cars and into the third position. He would hold this position over the final four laps to collect his first podium finish since he became a Pro class driver after the round 2 of the Summer Shootout.
What was the race like for you tonight with the third place finish?
“It was just an up and down race. At first the inside was stacking up, so I tried to go to the outside and maybe we could roll better on the top. It didn’t work out so I went back down and it was just back and forth the whole race. It kinda just fell in our lap there at the end honestly. I choose the outside on that final restart, and it was a really smart decision and I was able to dig deep and swing out high and avoid the mess.”
“We had a better car this week than we have had the whole series so far. We have made improvements and we have some things that we know we can improve for the next week as well. Our biggest thing right now is just qualifying better. We have a good car race wise and it is just all about track position in Pro.”
“We have good race speed. We know that we can be up there and contend with these guys, we just have to have a better qualifying effort and that starts with me.”
The seventh round of the 2016 Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway takes place on Tuesday, July 19th. Gates open at 5:00 pm and then followed by heat racing and qualifying sessions. The feature events will begin around 7 pm.
