WINSTON-SALEM, NC : John Holleman opened the 2017 season this past Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium in a familiar place, victory lane. Holleman started the Sportsman 40 lap event in 8th position before he found the top spot in the early laps.
After the leaders tangled in turn two which followed the first caution flag of the race, Holleman inherited the lead. He would then go on to battle Derek Stoltz over the remainder of the race for the win. Holleman was able to hold off the charges of Stoltz on several different occasions.
On lap 29, the race was called official as the skies opened up over the quarter-mile track thus John Holleman was declared the race winner in his Midway Mobile Storage Ford Mustang.
“When I tried to use my brakes I was sliding a good bit down in there, so I was glad the caution came out when it did,” Holleman explained on his performance.
“Derek Stoltz ran me good. That’s a race you want to see right there if you are at Bowman Gray Stadum. Two guys battling it out for the lead. He [Stoltz] could have taken it from me if he wanted to, and done me wrong and instead he raced me clean. I’ll remember that, it was a good race.”
The team returns to Bowman Gray Stadium this Saturday night, April 29th for the second Sportsman 40 lap event of the 2017 season.
